Contact Chris on 07990 014364.

Who it's for

Any staff at a venue who have a duty to respond to a pool emergency — performing a rescue or assisting a lifeguard team: receptionists and front-of-house, spa hosts, chefs, waiting and bar staff, housekeeping and maintenance, duty managers, and gym staff. It is not a replacement for a lifeguard qualification such as the NPLQ — it's for venues that don't have a full lifeguard team but need trained responders on call.

What the course covers

Over two days: Section One — the Emergency Rescuer's role (pool safety operating procedures); Section Two — responding to an emergency (emergency action plan); Section Three — CPR, first aid and AED.

Why it matters

HSG179 — the HSE's guidance on managing health and safety in swimming pools — sets out the requirement clearly:

"When the pool is in use, there must be a safe system of work to identify a person in difficulty and ensure that a rescue can be performed. For example, in the absence of lifeguards, there should be designated 'on-call' competent staff to respond immediately to deal with any emergency. They should be suitably trained and capable of reaching the poolside in time to perform a rescue and provide emergency first aid if the alarm is raised." — HSG179, paragraph 113

The RLSS UK Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award is built around exactly that duty. It means your venue can demonstrate a trained, compliant emergency response — without employing full-time lifeguards.

FAQs

Q: What is the Swimming Pool Emergency Rescue Award?
A: It's an RLSS UK award that trains staff to respond to a swimming pool emergency — performing a rescue and giving CPR, first aid and AED (defibrillator).

Q: Who should take it?
A: Any venue staff with a duty to respond to a pool emergency — receptionists and front-of-house, spa hosts, chefs, waiting and bar staff, housekeeping and maintenance, duty managers and gym staff. It's for venues without a full lifeguard team, and it isn't a replacement for the NPLQ.

Q: Do you deliver the training at our own pool?
A: Yes. We run it on-site at your own pool anywhere in the UK, so your team trains in the environment they'll actually be responding in.

Q: How much does Emergency Pool Responder training cost?
A: £1,099 + VAT for up to 12 delegates (from £91.58 + VAT per person at a full group). Call Chris on 07990 014364 for a quote.

Q: How long is the course?
A: Two days — either both days face-to-face, or blended (one day online, one day face-to-face).

Q: Do we legally need pool responder training?
A: HSG179, the HSE's guidance on managing health and safety in swimming pools, requires a safe system of work to identify a person in difficulty and ensure a rescue can be performed. Where lifeguards aren't on constant duty, there should be designated, trained 'on-call' staff able to reach the poolside and provide emergency first aid.
