First Aid at Work Requalification: When Does Your Certificate Expire?

First aid at work certificates do not last forever. An Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate is valid for three years from the date of the course, and once it lapses your workplace cover lapses with it. Here is how the deadlines actually work.
The three-year rule
Both Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work certificates are valid for three years. There is no automatic renewal and no refresher that keeps an expired certificate alive - you either requalify before the expiry date, or the certificate stops counting.
The HSE grace period
HSE does allow a short grace period for FAW and EFAW certificates. If a certificate expires, the holder can still be counted as a first aider for a limited period - normally up to 28 days - provided they complete their requalification within that time. It is a breathing space, not an extension, and it disappears the moment the requalification is missed.
How requalification differs by course
EFAW: the requalification is the same one-day course, repeated
FAW: a two-day requalification, rather than the full three days - First Aid at Work Renewal
If the certificate has been expired for longer than the grace period, you usually need the full course again
Why the date matters more than you think
An expired certificate is not just an administration problem. It means the person cannot be counted towards your first aid cover, which may leave you below what your risk assessment requires. It also tends to be the first thing an inspector asks to see.
How to stop it happening
Keep a simple register of who is trained, in what, and when each certificate expires
Set a reminder around three months before each expiry date so you can book in good time
Train more than one person per shift so a single expiry never leaves a gap
Requalify slightly early where you can - the certificate simply restarts from the new course date
We book requalification around you
